Cute

So if a certain four year old is a pirate captain, to what role is his brother consigned? “He’s my hardy.” As in, “Avast ye, me hardies!” Clearly Soren has not been studying piratese on this website since they leave that term out.

Conceit to Make Mrs. Lewis Laugh

Another trip to InfernoMart Good, penitent I, I try faithfully to attend my Sunday morning menu-making, grocery list generating, best-intentioned ritual — only demonic forces, then, remain as a plausible explanation of how at the unholy hour of 5:15 pm I find my minivan drawn into a line of cars oozing through the grocery store parking lot, desperate for a parking space that won’t require me to drag a two-year-old forcibly by the wrist five hundred meters past puddles and irresistible shiny things lying on the ground — oh, the magic of broken beer bottles! And I look around at the other zombie mom shoppers, their children surreptitiously pinching each other or outright throwing themselves on the ground in front of my shopping cart, and...

Submerged

There aren’t enough hours in the day… and at 10:30 when they’re all finally in bed, lunches are in the refrigerator, dishes in the dishwasher, and the coffee maker set to go off again in eight hours I realize it’s not just a different time zone from everyone I want to call, I am in a different time speed zone. It’s a mixed thing — on the one hand, life’s so short and there are so many great things I haven’t read yet, that it’s hard to spend much time sorting through poorly...

Wedding Rings

Pictures of Aodan and Xander as ring bearers On October 23rd Raven’s cousin Hans married Tina, whom we have all loved since she moved to Texas three years ago. It was a gorgeous wedding. Tina was beautiful. Aodan and Xander did a great job as ring-bearers, bringing dignity to a job they took very seriously and I was so grateful to all of the adults who treated them with respect (not many 8 and 5 year olds like hearing how cute and adorable they are, even when, like my boys, they really are). In particular, Xander was very taken with the maid of honor, Ellen Sunshine, who took upon herself the task of instructing the boys in their march down the aisle. And there were crowds of people there — Hans is the sort of person who inspires such loyalty from...
